Why join a running club?

Do you want to improve your 5km fun run time or your half marathon time? Do you want support in achieving a full marathon? Do you want to improve your fitness for other sports?

Perhaps you are starting to run or walk to improve your fitness for everyday life and are looking for a partner to help - or maybe you enjoy the club’s social atmosphere.

Or you might be a competitive athlete who is interested in training and receiving coaching to help you reach your best at the national and international level.

Whatever you want to get out of running or walking, whatever your age or ability, Olympic Harriers can help. Running - the sport where you set the fitness level you want and you set your commitment level.

Club Activities

So, what does a running club like Olympic Harriers do?

We operate mainly during winter for the cross-country and road season, which runs from March to October. We usually meet on Saturday afternoons. The walking groups have a walking calendar that takes them all over the roads and bush tracks of Wellington; the runners’ calendar is made up of:

  • Social club runs (“pack runs”)
  • Walking packs
  • Club races
  • And for your competitive side, inter-club races, where we compete against other clubs from Wellington or from around the country.

We also support athletes who want to compete in track and field events over summer.

See the events page for a calendar and details of both running and social events.

We place a strong emphasis on coaching and junior development, and hold organised coaching/training sessions each Tuesday night, run by the club’s accredited coach. See the services page for more details of coaching programmes.

Long slow distance training pack leave from the clubrooms at 8:00am most Sundays during the season.

About Olympic Harriers

Olympic Harriers is one of the oldest harrier clubs in the Wellington region. It was formed in 1914 as an off-shoot of the former Brooklyn Harrier Club.

The Hutt Valley Harrier Club was formed by members of Olympic who lived in the valley and Olympic Christchurch was formed by a former member of our club.

Find out more about the early history of Olympic Harriers  here.

With clubrooms situated on the top field of Alex Moore Park in the Wellington suburb of Johnsonville, our location is only minutes from the heart of the Capital and in the centre of the Northern Suburbs.

A list of the club’s national title winners and New Zealand representatives can be found on our representatives page.

Keeping in touch

We have a number of ways of letting you know what’s going on the club. The first is via the website - the calendar is regularly updated with news of what’s coming up. Secondly, our email mailing list will let you know of any last minute changes or important news.

If we don’t have your email address, please let our registrar know (registrar@olympicharriers.org).

Please don’t forget to check your email regularly!

If you don’t have regular access to the website, there’s always the traditional noticeboard in the clubrooms.
