PRESIDENT'S REPORT

What a season for top performances by the club. Though ournumbers are down slightly on a few years ago, our runners haveproduced some of the best performances seen by Olympic runnersfor many years. Leading the way were Mike Wakelin and MatthewProsser. They can be justly proud of their achievements and bothare destined for even better results next year. However, theywere very well supported by many others in the club, which resultedin a number of excellent team placings in inter-club races. Especiallyencouraging have been the efforts of our under-12 runners keep it up!

These are difficult times for all sports clubs with the manycompeting attractions, including doing nothing, and the currentpreference for selective involvement rather than club membership.Your committee has worked hard on a number of initiatives to attractand retain members but frequently we have felt that our effortswere barely stemming the tide. Yet we held a terrific weekendcamp for the juniors and there was a good representation of seniorwomen in the Wellington cross country championships.

It is important to recognise that the results of the hard workdo not always come instantly. Next year we need to continue tobuild on the efforts of this year.

The hardest worker in the club is Murray McGaughran. We enjoytaking the mickey out of 'the colonel' but do appreciate and recognisehis huge contribution over many years. Next year Murray is takinga step back and will be focusing on coaching. He has earned aneasier few seasons so enjoy, Murray!

We have also undertaken some very important renovations onthe clubrooms and are now set for the next seven years!! A newroof, repainted exterior and repaired porch and doors give usquality clubrooms.

Personally it has been difficult to devote the time necessaryto being club president. Much of my work has been outside Wellingtonresulting in my frequent absence from even club runs and thathas been disappointing. To be club president it is important thatyou are seen to be present in person as well as in spirit. Hencemy decision to not stand for president again. I thank everyone, especially Murray, Deborah, Peter, Phil and Mike R, Mike B, MikeF, Helen, and Robert for their support and assistance. Certainlymy support and assistance is there for the new committee.

It is therefore now up to you, the club members, to elect andsupport a new committee for next year. The task of being on theclub committee is an enjoyable one and not at all onerous. Soput yourself forward for the committee and really enjoy beingpart of the club.

Above all, keep fit, healthy and positive. It's a great lifeand the friends you make in running are the cream on the cake.

CLUB CAPTAIN'S REPORT

In writing this report, I wonder what the membership of ourclub will take from it? We should be proud of achievements individualsand teams have made, not only in terms of the top results, butalso in positive progress made in whatever form that may havebeen. We must acknowledge our own and others successes. We mustalso face up to those areas that may not have gone as plannedand the challenges that implies.

In terms of the challenges we face, it is still evident thatrecruitment and retention of members over all grades is a majorchallenge. Initiatives, such as the Junior Open Day prior to theseason starting, and the Junior Training Camp at Forest Lakesresulted in some increase in the number of younger members, butonly in the male grades. As a club we need to constantly workat recruiting females and juniors. It is a cliche, but youngstersare the club's future. This season we have encouraged and acceptedmore youngsters of 7 10yrs. The club must ensure these childrenhave plenty of fun, enjoy their experiences and they in turn willhopefully encourage their friends to come along and have fun too.It is a long-term plan that must be owned by the whole membershipif the club is to survive the pressures of multiple attractionsin sport and leisure activities available today.

In terms of results, Olympic has had a very good season both from activities within the club and in events outside oursyllabus, too many to mention here. However there are severalrunners who have had extraordinary results and successes thisseason. Matthew Prosser won all events he entered in his age grade, including, the Wellington Secondary School Cross-country at Trenthamand then the National Secondary School Cross-country in Christchurch. He also won the Wellington and North Island Cross-country titlesin Waikanae and Taupo respectively. Kyle Rosevear was third inthe same races in Christchurch, Waikanae and Taupo. The seniormen's grade has historically been the hardest grade for Olympicto achieve top results in. This season we have had tremendousresults in this grade. Michael Wakelin is the Wellington ProvincialCross-country champion for the 2000 season. I personally felta great deal of pride watching Mike run and win this race, asdid a lot of others. Mike backed this effort up with a fine secondat the Wellington Provincial Road Championships. In between thetwo, Mike represented New Zealand at the World Mountain RunningChampionships in Germany. He was the fifth Kiwi to finish andcounted in the team that finished third and won a World Championshipbronze medal. Richard Roberts, our Australian connection, hada very good season and finished third at the Provincial Cross-countryat Waikanae. Unfortunately, Richard has to head off back to Australia.Thank you for your contribution, Richard. I hope you enjoyed yourtime with Olympic and best wishes to you and your family for thefuture. The senior men's team also did very well this season andonly missed a team win at Waikanae by 25 points.

In my role as club coach, I have witnessed a few people makingsome very good progress this season, both young and old. In theaftermath of the Olympics and all the 'talk' of what went wrongor right, there is no substitute for hard work and sacrifice. If you understand and have a desire to achieve the best you can,you have the opportunity to do it with Olympic.

I would be lying if I said it hasn't been hard work, but ithas been a pleasure serving the club this season. Please takeheed of Arthur's words and see if you can help out on the committeeor in some other way in 2001. Good luck with your endeavours oversummer and come back ready for even better results next season.I'll see you next year.
